Having an innate ability to imitate many instruments helped lead to Riperton's discovery while she was a secretary at Chess Records. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with her breast cancer diagnosis but did not disclose she was terminally ill. During the recording of the album, her cancer progressed to the point that she was in a great deal of pain. As a youth she studied music, drama, and dance at the city's Abraham Lincoln Center and later contemplated a career in opera.
